Heart of the Sea

Rell Sunn, pioneer of women’s surfing.

Born in Makaha on Oahu in 1947 to a Chinese father and a Hawaiian-Irish mother, Rell was battling with the boys in surf competitions by age 14 and in 1975 became an original member of the women’s professional surfing tour.  After a ferocious, 14-year fight with breast cancer—through which she surfed every day and became a disc jockey in addition to fueling the women’s surf movement—she succumbed in 1998.  The legend of her gracefulness and courage continues to inspire.
