My other Tom

At the risk of being boring by writing about my morning commute for the second day in a row, I must spread the word about my new shoes. Actually, they’re not that new, but today was the first day I could wear them as an unfortunate incident with a door rendered my right heel rather Frankenstein-ish for the past month. Stitches out, weather cool, today was the perfect day to break out my Toms.

Muslin canvas, with just the right amount of tufted-leather cushioning, they are the perfect segue from flippy-floppies for fall. But the best part is, for $44 plus shipping, I have also bought a pair of shoes for a kid in need. One for one. It’s beyond brilliant–using the purchasing power of individuals to promote the greater good.  But it would only be a gimmick if the shoes weren’t so damn comfortable. Even at my very brisk clip, my commute in the morning is 45 minutes, all pavement of course, and there aren’t too many shoes that can stand up to that. Even the Birkenstocks that I’ve been breaking in since 7th grade left a rainbow of blisters atop my foot. And though you might at first glance write these off as too crunchy, I argue that they are in fact chic, in that sort of nonchalant French seaside way.  So toss your tired Reefs and Rainbows, order a pair of these sweet slip-ons, and save your feet…and the world…

UPDATE: For the visually-curious, here you go, taken quickly when I got home today. Kind of an awkward pic, but I posted it because it was the best of the shoes.  And you can see my lovely Gypsy curiosa roses, too!

FYI sometimes Grist has coupons for $5 off Toms in the margin–and when you order, they’ll send you another promo code that you can pass along to your amigos…check it out…and get the latest environmental news…www.grist.org
